When you start out with Shotokan, you will learn the basic moves which are called Kata. Kumite is the stage where you are sparring with an imaginary opponent. Kumite is the process of using the sparring moves on a real opponent.

Ranks are used to denote experience levels. These rankings differ from school to school, but a black belt is considered the highest level in most schools. Often the black belts are embellished with stripes to denote other information about the person’s rank.
